A calculation supports a review. It does not authorize payment, filing, release or a claim.

Keep a multi-row record in Excel
Check the initial worked example

A carrier reports arrival at 07:30, the dock confirms loading started at 08:20 and the facility records release at 09:35, all at UTC−05:00. That is 50 minutes before loading and 75 minutes from loading start to release. The time log alone does not make any interval billable.

A repeatable method

How to use the worksheet

For US carriers, shippers, brokers and 3PL teams coordinating an assigned load across dispatch, the dock and billing.

Download the editable workbook
  1. Start with a facility reference, appointment window and local time zone. Record a dispatch ETA as an estimate and a facility appointment as a confirmed booking.

  2. Record actual check-in, dock start and release separately. Use the event source and time zone. Mark unknown times as missing.

  3. At shift change, name the next owner and required update. If finance needs to review detention, send the record and the applicable agreement through its approved channel.

Illustrative · Not a client result

A second worked example

A truck checks in at 08:10, loading starts at 08:55 and the facility reports release at 10:05 in the same time zone. The record shows 45 minutes before loading and 70 minutes from start to release. It does not establish how many minutes the customer owes.

Keep the decision with its owner

What this tool can establish

Elapsed time is not automatically billable detention or driver pay. Contract terms, appointment rules, incomplete evidence and facility events affect review. Physical loading, securement and site safety stay with the authorized on-site teams.
